THE ITEM DESCRIPTION: Louis Marx made this lithographed tin & plastic wind-up toy musical carousel featuring 3 Dumbo figures in the role of carousel “horses” & the Walt Disney characters Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck & Goofy adorning the top. The 3 Little Pigs are lithographed on the center base. The base is 8” in diameter & the toy measures 6” to the top. The key to operate the wind-up is at the very top center & when wound the the 3 Dumbo figures go in 1 direction & the carousel top goes in the other direction. One Dumbo has a metal wire extending out the back with a striker on the end. As it passes over the keys it strikes each in turn creating the musical sound. A very attractive, very charming & very hard to find mechanical toy from the late 1960s or possibly early 1970s. The edge of the carousel top is marked JAPAN in very small letters. A paper sticker on the underside is marked Louis Marx & Co. Copyright Walt Disney Productions Japan. The toy is predominately lithographed tin with a white plastic center post & arms & a turquoise plastic bottom plate. I believe I owned the first one of these toys to surface at a toy show in NJ in 1998 & it created quite a sensation. I sold it at the show for $2000. I did not see another one until 2016 & since 2016 I have seen just 3 or 4 more including 2 in original boxes. The condition of this one is outstanding with very little play wear. It works very well & when fully wound it runs for quite some time. The toy will no longer cause a sensation but it is still very hard to find & desirable as it features the always appealing flying elephant Dumbo. 061525/22DJJ(27) I always have lots of vintage 1930s Disneyana for sale on eBay as well as post WW2 mechanical toys featuring Disney characters.
