In the 1780s, Richard Austin and Thomas Badger, Jr. both modelled marking dies for their pewter sadware on the Massachusetts copper cent and 1/2 cent coins, Badger using the heraldic, "horned eagle", and Austin the Native American's image from the Massachusetts coat of arms.  Austin's, who used several other marks, is rarely found today, while Badger's is more plentiful.  This example is slightly shy of 8 1/2" inches in diameter  (a size also used by Badger).  It seems they may have been sharing molds at this early point in their respective careers.   Many strikes of this rare Austin mark are poor and faint.  This, though, is one of the better ones.  All in all, this is a scarce item from the early Federal years of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  No repairs.  Satisfaction guaranteed, as always.  Another no-apology item from Eaglemark Antiques!
