Original 1864 hand-colored atlas map by A.J. Johnson, removed from the Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas. Measures approx 18.25" x 26.75" overall (folio leaf), printed on heavy rag-content paper with the classic Johnson decorative border. This double-page plate features two major regional maps: Upper Map: “Johnson’s Turkey in Asia” • Covers the historic Ottoman provinces in Asia Minor, Syria, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Kurdistan, Palestine, Cyprus, and parts of the Caucasus • Early boundaries, caravan routes, river systems, coastal towns • Classical / biblical geographic references • Fine hand-coloring in pink, green, and yellow wash tones Lower Map: “Johnson’s Persia Arabia Beloochistan Afghanistan” • Shows Iran (Persia), the Arabian Peninsula, Persian Gulf regions, Oman, Yemen, and Afghanistan • Clearly drawn tribal regions, early political divisions, mountain ranges • Important caravan routes and major trade centers • Insets and decorative border consistent with Johnson’s 1860s style Condition • Light edge toning, faint foxing, minor margin wear typical of 160-year-old atlas sheets • Clean plate area with strong impressions and vivid original hand coloring • Ready for display or archival framing Excellent for collectors of antique maps, Middle East history, Ottoman Empire, biblical studies, Persia/Iran cartography, and early geopolitical boundaries.
