A majestic early 19th-century French Empire altar crucifix. This museum-quality piece features an ebonized wood cross with brass stringing, holding a finely cast gilt bronze (ormolu) Christ.
The base is adorned with a stunning gilt brass medallion depicting the Baptism of Christ by Saint John the Baptist. The iconography is rich with detail: Saint John holding his reed cross, Jesus kneeling in humility, and the Dove of the Holy Spirit radiating light above. Two gilt cherubs flank the central scene.
