Vintage Frederick & Nelson metal charge plate, from the Iconic Seattle Department Store. Metal Charg-a-Plates were first seen in the late 1920s, and began to fall out of use in the early 1960s as plastic charge cards became more popular. These metal plates were designed to save time by allowing clerks to accurately capture the customer's name and address on the sales slip - no worries about bad penmanship! Some of these plates could be used at multiple retailers in the same geographic area. I don't know about Seattle specifically, but I have seen these multi store metal plates for Spokane and Portland, Oregan, so it is likely Seattle had them too.
The brown leather case measures approximately 2-5/8" x 1-1/4". There are some signs of age, but the metal and clean, free of spots and rust, the paper insert is unwrinkled, with not water damage or other markings.
