This series of books written by H.S. Olcott (a Lawyer, a union military officer weeding out graft and corruption of military supplies during the Civil War and assigned to the commission investing Abraham Lincoln's assignation) documents out his travels with Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (HPB - renowned as the Sphinx of the 19th Century) This material was originally selected by Colonel Olcott and published in issues of The Theosophist Magazine. Much of the early history of the Society is known mainly through Olcott's colorful and detailed records.
Many mysterious and odd events are described within the diary, many events attested to by witnesses. Olcott was a very methodical individual.
He applied rigid tests to verify phenomena.
In reading his diary I learned H.S. Olcott revitalized Buddhism in Sri Lanka (modern day Ceylon) and performed miraculous healings for 1000's of people using mesmerism ( known also as magnetic healing). "Mesmerism, or "animal magnetism," is
a late 18th-century theory developed by Franz Anton Mesmer that proposed an invisible, physical fluid flows through the body and influences health. It involved practitioners using magnetic passes or touch to restore the flow of this energy, often inducing trances or convulsions, which directly laid the foundation for modern hypnosis." Source Merriam Websters Dictionary - Very good pre-owned edition. I bought these a while ago pre-owned apparently from a smokers domicile. Owners name in books, see photos.'86 & '87 date appears next to owners name, most likely purchased and read between1986-1987.
- Books do not smell, aired out over a period of years. Some nicotine stains may be present of covers. May have some notations in text, have not found any to date. Cover edges some chipping, minor tears, pages some minor yellowing on page tops.
- Spines are tight, end papers not cracked or torn, all fly leafs present, pictures of author and other theosophists present (see photos) heads and foot not bent, no torn pages. book jackets do exhibit either some sun fading, tobacco stain(suspected) torn edges. All apparently have a clipped corner on inside of front dust jacket along a dotted line (a mystery)
