This is a beautiful vintage Vietnamese lacquerware tray, handcrafted by Tayson Co., Ltd, as indicated by the original label on the back. This classic piece features intricate Mother-of-Pearl (or Abalone Shell) Inlay set into a deep, glossy black lacquer background.

Design:

The artwork depicts a serene sailing ship (possibly a traditional Vietnamese junk boat) with full sails, smaller boats in the distance, and a stylized landscape with rolling hills and a sun/moon. The iridescent shell catches the light beautifully, creating a shimmering effect.

Material & Technique:

Vietnamese lacquerware is created using sơn ta, a natural resin, and is known for its multi-layered, highly polished finish. The mother-of-pearl inlay is a painstaking process where carefully cut pieces of shell are embedded into the lacquer.
