Atomic Bomb Dome
Once a hall showcasing Hiroshima Prefecture's industries, its modern appearance was reflected in the Ota River. However, on August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m., the world's first atomic bomb detonated 570 meters above this building.
The intense heat of 6,000 degrees Celsius and the powerful blast instantly turned Hiroshima into a city of death and ashes. The area within a 2-kilometer radius was reduced to scorched earth, where it was said that no plants would grow for the next 70 years. The dome, a symbol of Hiroshima's atomic bomb tragedy, was exposed to the elements for over 20 years after the war and was on the verge of collapse. However, thanks to the fervent wishes of people around the world for peace, it was reinforced and preserved as the only building in the world to have survived an atomic bombing.
