3 compartments. I have cleaned the inside; however, there are "old stains" around the zipper areas (not too bad). I am not sure how the stains got there. They are not too bad, but I need to let everyone know the conditions. This was my mother's purse, so it is not from 2nd-hand places. 

The outside looks great.
