Description & Identification
This boxed set, titled “Fuzzy-Wuzzies Charging to Attack, Set Two” (catalogue number S.C.2), was hand-cast and painted by Frontline Figures, a Hong Kong-based manufacturer founded in 1984 specializing in museum-quality military miniatures in the traditional style of early lead soldiers.
The set portrays Sudanese warriors—often referred to as “Fuzzy-Wuzzies” in British Victorian military parlance—charging into battle with shields, spears, and swords, inspired by the Mahdist War (1881–1899) period. The figures feature distinctive hand-painted beadwork, animal-hide shields, and bright tribal attire reflecting the Beja warriors who fought against British and Egyptian colonial forces.
Each figure is made of white metal and individually enamel painted to a high gloss finish, consistent with Frontline’s production standards of the 1980s–1990s. The set includes seven (7) warriors, all on oval bases, with one detached spear and minor wear consistent with display or age. The foam insert and original green textured box with printed label are included, which significantly enhances collectible value.

Historical Context
Frontline Figures was among the earliest premium hand-painted military miniature brands to challenge W. Britain and King & Country in the 1980s. Its Sudan and Colonial Africa series remain among its most sought-after themes due to limited production and strong period accuracy.
The “Fuzzy-Wuzzies” sets, in particular, depict warriors immortalized in Rudyard Kipling’s 1892 poem praising their bravery against British forces. These sets were produced in small quantities and distributed primarily through specialty military model retailers and collectors’ clubs.
Collectibility Notes
• Early edition (#75/1000) adds desirable provenance.
• Intact spears and shields are critical to maintaining value.
• Box wear is minimal and acceptable for 1980s–1990s production.
• Rare subject matter—Mahdist-era Beja warriors—appeals strongly to Victorian colonial collectors.
