This listing is for one 8 1/2" by 12" page with prints on both sides.
These prints are reproductions done in 1942 of the original hand painted lithographs that Currier and Ives is so famous for. This page has been carefully removed from a vintage art book. Both sides are in very good condition.
Currier & Ives
Currier & Ives was the longest running printing establishment in the United States. It published over 7,000 individual lithograph titles over a span of 73 years and produced over a million prints. The pictures depicted nearly every aspect of every day American life and included disasters, politicians, sports, winter scenes and rural life.
Nathaniel Currier, who at 15 became an apprentice at William and John Pendleton of Boston - the first lithographic house in America. He later opened his own business - N. Currier, Lithographer - in 1835. John Merritt Ives began working for him as a bookkeeper in 1952. His knowledge of art, ability to understand what the public wanted and how to communicate with the company's artists made him invaluable. He was made a full partner in 1857 and the company became Currier & Ives.
The most well known of the many artists they worked with were Louis Maurer, Thomas Worth, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Fanny Palmer, George Henry Durrie and Charles Parsons. J. Schultz was responsible for most of the lettering. Hundreds of other craftspeople also worked for the firm grinding stones, printing, coloring, selling and supplying images.
Nathaniel Currier and John Merritt Ives died in the 1800s and the company was taken over by their sons.
Times changed. Photography which was invented in 1850 became easier to print. Faster commercial presses replaced the age old hand run lithographic presses. America lost most of its lithographic houses between 1870 and 1910.
