Gorgeous and pristine Front Entry Door Lock by the P. & F. Corbin company.   This 

"Ceylon" pattern was very popular and was produced for decades.  Its Vernacular 

School, Asymmetric design exhibits bold Eastlake-inspired features and has superb 

casting. 

Although "Ceylon" passage locks are fairly common, I rarely run across front-entry 

locks like this one.

It was featured in the 1895 company catalog (see 2nd photo).

The case exterior has the Corbin logo on one side and a patent date of Nov 1874? 

on the other.  The number "16" is inscribed on the face of the deadbolt.  The interior 

is inscribed "1330" in two places.

Lock measurements;

 The faceplate is 6 7/8"long x 1" wide

The box is 3 1/2" deep from the front of the faceplate, and 4 5/8" top to bottom.

Backset (the distance from the front edge of the face plate to the center of the  knob post hole) is 3 1/16".    Drop (distance from the center of the key cylinder hole to the center of the deadbolt knob post hole) is 3 1/16"

  

The lock does not have keys.  Most folks choose to install a separate modern deadbolt when installing antique locks in their front doors.  However, your local locksmith should be able to make keys if desired. Lock Restoration: The interior of the lock was fully disassembled and wire-brushed.   Springs were replaced as necessary. An industrial, high-quality lubricant was applied to the interior.  The case was repainted to match the original black finish. The faceplate was buffed to a mirror finish.  The recessed areas in the faceplate were hand-painted in black enamel.
