Decorative pictorial bindings with cloth dust jackets

France, Historic And Romantic; In Two Volumes

by Joel Cook

Philadelphia, Henry T. Coates & Co. 1904. Octavo two volumes. 787 pp.; illstd

Both volumes are in the publisher’s ornate dark green cloth, richly gilt-stamped and blind-debossed with crests, fleurons, and ruled decorative panels. A key survival point: the set retains the original dark green cloth-covered dust jackets, plainer by design with simple, elegant gilt spine titling—and they’ve clearly done their job, leaving the decorative bindings bright, crisp, and very handsome for their age.

Condition: jackets show light rubbing to edges/surfaces; books soundly bound with only mild shelf wear at spine ends and corners. Volume I: a closed tear across approx. 2/3 of page 43, neatly archivally mended with Japanese tissue (no loose pieces; text remains readable). Otherwise clean and unmarked. Uncommon in original cloth dust jackets, and especially so in this level of overall preservation. Near Fine in VG+ jackets.
