Block of four postage due stamps from the Italian Colony of Eritrea, issued in 1920.
Text: SEGNATASSE / 60 / Colonia Eritrea / CENTESIMI
Translation: Postage Due / 60 / Colony of Eritrea / Cents.
Eritrea was the first colony of the Kingdom of Italy, officially established in 1890. To manage the postal system within the territory, the Italian administration frequently utilized stocks of metropolitan Italian stamps, overprinting them for colonial use. This item consists of the Italian "Segnatasse" (Postage Due) stamps featuring a central numeral design, overprinted "Colonia Eritrea."
Postage due stamps were applied by postal clerks to mail that was insufficiently prepaid by the sender, indicating the amount to be collected from the addressee. The use of overprinted Italian stock was a standard practice in Italian colonies until specific colonial designs were introduced or during periods of shortage. This block retains the sheet margin (selvedge) on the right side.
