The 1938 Buffalo Nickel and Jefferson Nickel: A Transition in American Coinage
In 1938, American coinage witnessed a significant transition with the phasing out of the Buffalo nickel and the introduction of the Jefferson nickel. These two coins, each with its own distinct design and historical significance, mark an important moment in the numismatic history of the United States.

The 1938 Buffalo Nickel
The Buffalo nickel, also known as the Indian Head nickel, was first minted in 1913 and continued until 1938. Designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the coin features a composite portrait of three Native American chiefs on the obverse and an American bison, commonly referred to as a buffalo, on the reverse. The 1938 issue marks the final year of the Buffalo nickel's production.

The 1938 Buffalo nickel was minted in limited quantities, making it a sought-after coin for collectors. Only the Denver Mint produced Buffalo nickels that year, and a relatively small mintage of 7,020,000 coins adds to its rarity and appeal. This final issue of the Buffalo nickel represents the end of an era, capturing the essence of American frontier history and the nation's westward expansion.

The 1938 Jefferson Nickel
The Jefferson nickel was introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo nickel. Designed by Felix Schlag, the Jefferson nickel features a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, on the obverse. The reverse depicts Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia plantation home, an enduring symbol of his legacy.

The new design was selected through a public competition, with Schlag's entry winning out of nearly 400 submissions. The 1938 Jefferson nickel was minted at all three major mints: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The Philadelphia Mint produced the majority of these coins, followed by smaller quantities from Denver and San Francisco.

The introduction of the Jefferson nickel marked a shift towards modernity in American coin design, emphasizing the nation’s founding principles and honoring one of its most influential Founding Fathers. The coin's design has remained largely unchanged, enduring as a staple of American currency for over eight decades.

Conclusion
The year 1938 stands as a significant juncture in the history of U.S. coinage, witnessing the transition from the iconic Buffalo nickel to the enduring Jefferson nickel. Each coin, with its distinct artistic and historical attributes, represents a unique chapter in the story of American numismatics. Collectors and history enthusiasts continue to cherish these coins, celebrating the heritage and evolution of American currency.
