Before saying a few words about the current item for sale...Greetings Vinyl Lovers! Welcome to 2026! With this new year, Dr. John's Spin Factory is kicking into a higher gear. Here's what that means: We will be listing many more records much more quickly. To do so will require reducing what has been one of our signature attributes, providing meaningful, often personal, background about and insight into the musics and performances up for sale. (Of course, we will always provide the specifics of the release itself--label, year, and any related details known.) Regarding insights into the music, no worries! Should you want more info about an album we have listed, you can access much excellent information online. The sites I visit regularly include, 'Allmusic,' 'Analog Planet,' and "Pitchfork.' These are often at least decent starting points. Still, let's be clear, there are thousands of great listens, great pieces of music waiting to join the covert library between your ears that any number of reviewers have either panned, only listened to briefly, or simply ignored. Bah! Don't let the music critics (who can't play music themselves) dictate your musical world! Remember Dr. John's Spin Factory central advice regarding any piece of music: "Spin It Thrice, Might Be Nice!" And, to be clear, this isn't the kind of advice about which one might quip, "Hey! Take my advice. I'm not using it!" Heavens, this has been a central tenant of my personal music listening for nearly 60 years. No kidding...It's only been thousands of times that I have come to be enthusiastic about a composition, song, or album that, by contrast, after my initial listen I either disliked or was ambivalent. As reviewers of complex music (often jazz) have often written, "Listeners will be rewarded by repeated listenings." Much of the time, that's what I have experienced.
Now, as for the current album up for sale, Dr. John's Spin Factory presents The Jesus & Mary Chain's 1994 album, "Stoned & Dethroned." A damned fine album that, for better or worse, was not released in the USA on vinyl until 2012, and then only in small numbers (based on the declining sales of vinyl at that point). Hence, the price... My friends, it's all about supply and demand. You will notice that there is only one other first issue, UK copy of this album currently for sale on Ebay (and it's both used and more expensive)! So, where did my copy originate? In 1994, when I was a starving graduate student and lover of all types of new music, I purchased the vinyl you see in the photos at one of my favorite record emporiums: The Vinyl Solution in Grand Rapids Michigan. They were so awesome. They specialized in albums from the UK (often unavailable in the US), which is where my copy was made. Another important thing to know related to this vinyl's country of origin: At least in those days the record manufacturers in the UK did not shrink wrap new records. (For them it was a silly waste of plastic!) To mollify the concerns of their American customers (accustomed to new LPs wrapped tightly in thin plastic) the Vinyl Solution placed every UK import they sold into a plastic slipcover and taped down the flap of the slipcover with two pieces of Scotch tape. If you check the photos I have provided you will see this tape and you will see that it has not been disturbed. I suppose it is conceivable that I could have undid the tape, played the record, then placed the record in a new plastic slipcover with brand new tape. I assure you, I did not. Plus, how could I have done that given how the record appears now? The plastic slipcover, which, as you can see in the photos, is undisturbed (no stretching or distortions) and the original store pricing and 'Made in UK' stickers remain undisturbed in place.
To summarize: A) I wouldn't do that and B) If I had, you'd see the evidence.
Regardless, rest assured, if this vinyl is defective I will happily pay for you to return the album to me and refund your money.
As always, thank you for reading and for supporting the world of recorded music on vinyl! Enjoy some great music today! Dr. John
