Margie Joseph was never a soul star, she was never as well known as Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan or Tina Turner. But she is a talented, charming singer whose voice is recognizable. Although heavily influenced by Aretha Franklin, she has a softer, girlish edge. Joseph left Stax in 1972 and signed with Atlantic. She released her self-titled LP the following year. Produced by Arif Mardin, Joseph shows an appealing mix of Northern and Southern Soul styles. A large portion of the album is devoted to covers, and the songs Joseph performs here range from Ellington Jordan's "I'd Rather Go Blind" to Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" to Brook Benton's "I'll Take Care of You." She also chooses a Dolly Parton song and interprets “Touch Your Woman” in a soulful way.
