»Heroes Symphony« is a symphony (also known as Symphony No. 4 "Heroes"), which the American composer Philip Glass created in 1996 based on David Bowie's "Heroes" album. The earlier “Low Symphony” was also based on the Bowie album “Low”. The “Heroes Symphony” features two flutes, two piccolos, two clarinets, a bass clarinet, two bassoons, three horns, three trumpets, two trombones, a bass trombone, tuba, percussion, harp, piano, strings and celesta.
The “Heroes” Symphony will be performed by the American Composers Orchestra under the direction of Michael Riesman with Dennis Russell Davies as composer. Like its predecessor, "Low," "Heroes" was one of the most experimental and avant-garde albums, so it only made sense that Philip Glass should follow the "Low Symphony" with "Heroes," translating the minimalist sketches of Bowie and Eno for a full orchestra.
Surprisingly, Glass's arrangements and orchestration underline the icy atmosphere of the original compositions; The shiny, almost glass-like textures breathe wonderfully cold. Thoroughly captivating!

HC v. Dadelsen in FonoForum 7/97: "...beautiful pop pieces from 1977, transformed into igniting instrumental music, with Glass's pointed brushstrokes! Many thanks to Andrea Giovanni from San Marco (it was a good idea!); Many thanks today also to David Bowie and Brian Eno!"
