MEMOIRS OF THE SOCIETY OF GRUB-STREET

From 1737, two volumes housing the first 138 issues of this weekly journal of satire and bombast, which were originally published in pamphlet form between January 1730 and August 1732. The poetry and prose were published anonymously, but Alexander Pope is known to have been a major contributor. 

This first edition set is in its original leather covers and remains in good condition overall. Both covers of Volume One and the front cover of Volume Two are detached, along with the first page of One. The covers also show some general wear and slight loss at the edges. Binding is still good, no loose pages. There is an early book plate inside the front covers of both, and a later ownership signature to a preliminary page of both. The texts are toned with age but show only minor handling, no writing, stains, or other significant flaw. An excellent candidate for rebinding.

Bound in leather, 4" X 6.5". Volume One: xxxiv + 313, followed by errata page and 10-page index. Volume Two: iii + 326, followed by errata page and 9-page index.
