During 1917-18, Monte Tomba, a peak on the Monte Grappa massif  was the site of intense fighting during World War I between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces. Following the Battle of Caporetto, Austrian troops captured it and surrounding areas in November 1917, aiming to advance into the Venetian plain. Italian forces, supported by defensive fortifications, eventually repelled the final major Austro-Hungarian offensive in late October 1918, leading to an Italian victory at the Battle of vittorio Veneto
