Taken from the original analog master tapes, pressed on MoFi SuperVinyl and strictly limited to 12,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP box presents the groundbreaking album with benchmark detail, tonality and immediacy. It is the first time that the beloved LP has been prepared in audiophile quality. It is one of six iconic Mitchell records from the 1970s that Mobile Fidelity is reissuing as vinyl and SACD sets.
Everything about "Blue" sounds even more intimate, captivating and inescapable on this transparent pressing, achieved through a virtually non-existent noise floor and outstanding groove definition. Mitchell's voice, which is in the foreground and accompanied primarily by minimalist acoustic guitars, piano and dulcimer playing, comes through loud and clear. Floating notes and radiant chords serve as question marks, commas and phrases. The presence in space and spatial dimensionality illustrate the full Spektrum of introspective emotions - pain and sorrow, self-knowledge and joy, difficulty and uncertainty, warmth and longing - that Mitchell traverses, questions and contemplates on the album. The vulnerability that the singer once spoke of is exposed here like never before.
The packaging of the "Blue" UD1S set underlines the album's outstanding status. Both LPs are housed in a deluxe box and come in special, foil-stamped sleeves with faithful graphics that highlight the magnificence of the recording. This UD1S re-release is a curatorial artifact for listeners who appreciate sound quality and production and want to engage with everything to do with the album, including the unforgettable cover photo of a pensive Mitchell, taken by Tim Considine.
UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) process
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) process bypasses the generational losses of the traditional three-step coating process by eliminating two steps: the manufacture of father and mother plates, which are designed to produce numerous stampers from each cut lacquer. With UD1S coating, the stampers (also called "converts") are made directly from the paints. Since each varnish only produces one die, several varnishes have to be cut. Mobile Fidelity's UD1S process produces an LP with the lowest possible noise floor. Eliminating two steps in the coating process also reveals musical details and dynamics that would be lost in the traditional multi-stage process. With UD1S, every aspect of vinyl production is optimized to produce the best sounding vinyl album available today.
MoFi SuperVinyl
Developed by NEOTECH and RTI, MoFi SuperVinyl is the most sophisticated vinyl blend ever developed. Analog lovers have never seen (or heard) anything like it. The extraordinarily expensive and extremely complex special compound is aimed at two specific areas of improvement: reduction of the background noise and improved groove definition. The vinyl composition features a new carbon-free dye (hold the disc up to the light and see it) and creates the quietest finish in the world. This high-resolution formula also allows for the creation of clean grooves that are indistinguishable from the original finish. MoFi SuperVinyl offers the closest approximation to what the label's engineers hear in the mastering lab.
