Item description:
Majolica ceramic sculpture, entirely handcrafted without a mold, depicting an African woman with a vase, signed inside with a signature engraved into the ceramic paste with a metal nib "Tanagra." The sculpture was created in Rome and dates back to between 1935 and 1960.
Information on artist and/or manufacturer:
The Tanagra factory was founded in the early 1940s by Adolfo Merlone in Rome. The company, in which the owner's wife, Maria Pagella, also collaborates, produces one-of-a-kind artistic ceramics in a primitivist style, created by Adolfo Merlone himself, as well as modern-style majolica, earthenware, and terracotta for furniture and architecture. Adolfo Merlone, to whom we can attribute the authorship of this sculpture, was born in Turin in 1910 and participated in numerous ceramic exhibitions and competitions in Faenza, Albisola, Gubbio, Vicenza, and Florence, always receiving important recognition. In 1958, he participated in the famous "Picasso-Le Corbusier-Merlone" exhibition organized by the Milanese art gallery Totti in Hagen, Germany. Adolfo Merlone died in Genoa in 1982.
Useful information for the evaluation of the object:
In the photos just below this description, we've provided historical information about the workmanship and biography of Adolfo Merlone for those who would like to learn more. There's also a photo of a majolica terracotta sculpture by Adolfo Merlone decorated with heavy lustre glazes, similar to ours, which fetched €600-700 many years ago.
Final thoughts on the subject:
Unfortunately, not many works of this extremely rare manufacture are available, but the artistic quality of the sculpture, the majolica enamels used, the beautiful, rich glazing, and the originality of the woman's pose are evident. I especially draw your attention to the hands holding the vase, with the fingers spread, and the beautiful arching of the female figure. This sculpture is irresistibly charming and beautiful, a truly rare piece. It should also be remembered that this is an extremely rare, niche Roman work, highly collectible, considering that the Tanagra factory boasts a limited production of extremely high-quality examples. It is a true work of art, a unique piece, entirely crafted and handcrafted without a mold.

OUR COMMERCIAL POLICY
Aware that we operate in the eBay market, our prices are often lower than the prices at which very similar objects are offered on other online sales platforms, the prices at which they are offered by art galleries in cities such as Rome, New York or London and also the best auction results achieved by similar objects, which, overall, can give an indication of the value of the object, while lower auction results or sales at low prices, by inexperienced sellers who do not know the real value of the object, should, in our opinion, be considered as a stroke of luck for the buyer rather than an indication of the value of the object. The price we ask is always the lowest possible considering how much was paid for the object and the eBay commissions (for the sale, payment and any currency exchange: from a minimum of 15% to a maximum of 21%, depending on the country in which the object was sold) because we prefer to retain many customers by earning less on the single object, focusing on quantity.

For each object there may be multiple advertisements in different countries: USA, Italy, France, United Kingdom, etc. Any price differences are due only to changes in the exchange rate of the various currencies between when we made the advertisement and when you see it.
