Engraved copperplate map, hand-coloured, 8.6 x 12.7 cms; 11.3 x 17 cms (sheet), text in Dutch on the verso (relating to a map of Bengal), margins dusty and expert paper repairs to the corners, but the map in very good condition.

One of the earliest published maps of the kingdoms of Burma from the rare first edition of Langenes' "Caert-thresoor", published in 1598.

"Arakan was a proficient sea power, shielded from attacks from Pegu by the Arakan Yoma Range and wielded considerable influence over neighbouring Chittangong, which [Portugal] had claimed as a vassal state since 1459. Although early relations between Portugal and Arakan were marred by mutual distrust, piracy and looting, during the latter part of the sixteenth century Portugal aligned itself with Arakan and Chittagong to subdue Pegu. This alliance led to the tragic devastation of Pegu by the Arakanese-Chittagongese-Portuguese triangle in 1599-1600, just after the publication of the Langenes map. Langenes used Arakan, the mightier of these two Portuguese allies to denote Burma as a whole."
