Supported by a long history and tradition Mino ware accounts for approximately 60% of the national market share for tableware making it no exaggeration to say it represents Japanese pottery. It's a pottery that is casually used in everyday life becoming ingrained in our everyday lives without us even realizing it. Mino ware's history dates back more than 1300 years. Initially the techniques for making Sue ware were introduced from the Korean Peninsula. In the 10th century during the Heian period ash-glazed pottery known as white porcelain began to be produced. This white porcelain is an improved version of Sue ware incorporating glazes. Around this time the number of kilns increased and the area became a full-scale pottery production center. From the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period as the tea ceremony became popular pottery reflecting the tastes of tea masters was produced. In the early Showa period demand for luxury goods increased and with the increasing mechanization of production techniques also improved significantly. Kilns evolved from charcoal kilns to heavy oil kilns shuttle gas kilns tunnel kilns and roller hearth kilns all of which led to improvements in yield standardization of products and mass production. Fortunately Mino ware was spared from the flames of war and has weathered numerous recessions and now boasts the overwhelming largest production volume in Japan in both name and reality. Western tableware accounts for approximately 51% of domestic production Japanese tableware for approximately 58% and tiles for approximately 41%. Mino ware accounts for the majority of tableware used in Japan.
