Antique Chinese Jian ware “hare’s fur” ceramic tianqiuping vase

Dates to Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279 CE)

Vase features a hare’s fur glaze of black with light brown bands and speckles around the neck and body.

Base is unglazed, exposing the coarse brown ware beneath. This style is typical of Southern Song pottery.

Jian ware is a form of stoneware first created in the city of Jianyang in Southwest China in 960 CE, with production continuing into the 14th century. The pottery’s simple shapes serve as a base for Jian ware’s delicate glaze patterns, such as the hare's fur effect here. These and other Jian ware glaze patterns are caused by excess iron in the glaze being forced out during the firing process.
