Savannah, GA, 1952, Large, Orig. Watercolor, Signed “Jones, 52” WPA Style, Genre Scene
Description: Painted on high quality watercolor paper, with a french watermark. A Savannah street scene is painted on both sides by, presumably, two different artists. The intended front side is signed, “Jones” and is dated “52.”
The 2nd watercolor, on the reverse, is signed “Henderson” on the top. And on the bottom, written in pencil, “41st + Drayton Sts.”
The Jones piece pictures dilapidated, leaning buildings and three African American figures. Light, colorful laundry is hung in the breeze between two houses. A kind of masterful use of bright and subdued colors.
I am not an art expert, but, according to many sites on the internet, the painting looks to be the early work of Myrtle Jones. If not Myrtle, a highly competent artist created it. In any case it is a remarkable genre painting of a 1950s Savannah neighborhood.
Dimensions: 22 1/8" wide X 15 1/8"
Maker: One signed Jones, and a second signed Henderson.
Condition: The Jones watercolor is in very good shape. The bottom vertical edge has the tiniest curl. The colors are as bright as when they were painted. For years it lay in a very big scrapbook out of the light.
The Henderson side has glue residue from tape and also remnants of the tape. See both bottom corners. There are Xs sketched on the work.
