COOL-SEASON PERFORMANCE

Vates Blue Scotch Curled is a cold-tolerant kale that grows best during cool spring and fall weather. Established plants can continue producing after frost. Extended summer heat may slow growth, reduce leaf quality and cause plants to bolt.

HOW TO PLANT

1. Start seeds indoors approximately 3–4 weeks before the final spring frost, or direct sow outdoors when the soil can be worked.
2. For a fall crop, start seeds approximately 6–8 weeks before the first expected autumn frost.
3. Sow 3–4 seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep per cell or planting location.
4. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination without leaving it waterlogged.
5. Thin seedlings to the strongest plant after true leaves develop.
6. Space mature plants approximately 12–18 inches apart, with rows approximately 24 inches apart.
7. Grow in full sun during cool conditions. Partial sun may be helpful in warmer weather.
8. Maintain consistent moisture. Approximately 1 inch of water per week is suitable under typical conditions, adjusting for rainfall, soil and temperature.

HARVEST

Begin harvesting the outside leaves when they reach a usable size, generally around 60 days after sowing. Leave the center growing bud intact so the plant can continue producing new leaves.
