‘Wuzi’, which translates to ‘dark purple’ is said to be a top-tier variety with excellent flavor and large size.

Yangmei is rare and not widely known here in the US, but it is making its name known and there are commercial growers slowly starting to emerge here in the US.

They are prolific fruiting trees and produce a fruit that resembles a firm mulberry in a spherical shape, which can be as big as a ping pong ball, with one seed in the middle like a cherry. I describe the flavor simply as fruit punch. Loads of wonderful berry flavors and even pomegranate, with a great level of sweetness and a perfect balance of tartness. They are absolutely WONDERFUL and addicting to eat. The problem is that they are so rare and have such a high demand, so everything about them are pricey right now.

Keep in mind that these trees are often dioecious, requiring separate male and female trees, but there are types out there that produce both flowers and produce on their own. It’s always best to have a specific male tree for best pollination and fruit set.
