Wonderful hand-sculpted ethnic sculpture in solid dark wood, depicting an African family, signed with a metal plate on the base "Makonde Sculpture - East Africa".
This sculpture is traceable to the Ujamaa sphere, designed by Roberto Yakobo Sangwani one of various styles of Makonde art formally known as Dimoongo, which means "power of force" or "tree of life". An entirely hand-sculpted figure, therefore a unique piece, made with one of the finest woods in the world, and offered at an excellent price.

From our online research, we've found many similar Makonde sculptures on offer on various online art and antiques sites at very high prices, sometimes over €1,000. Unfortunately, we're not particularly expert in African art and can't accurately estimate the value of this sculpture, but we're certainly talking about a unique, hand-carved piece of excellent quality that could command considerable value.

Makonde sculptures are those made in East Africa by craftsmen or artists belonging to the Makonde people of northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania. Art historians, dealers and collectors have contributed to the development, thanks to a growing demand for this type of objet d'art of this genre of African art that can be traced back to the 1930s, when the first documented exhibition of Makonde art at the "Centro Cultural dos Novosin Mozambique". Regardless of which central figure is the main feature of Makonde art is to represent a central figure surrounded and supported by other figures, these sculptures are called "ujamaa", which literally means "family ties".
