Spectacular, very rare acid-treated blown glass vase, made by the very famous and important French manufacturer Frères Daum of Nancy. Signed Daum Nancy with Lorraine cross. Entirely hand decorated with a lake landscape with trees in bas-relief. Datable to the first decades of the 20th century, between 1900 and 1920, made in France.

Daum brothers' vases are among the most sought-after of all early 20th-century European manufacturers. Auction results are numerous and impressive; from our online searches, the four highest prices found on Art Price range from just over €29,000 to just over €66,000, with a 25-30% premium added to the hammer price. We then found other vases listed on the online platform 1stDibs, asking prices starting at €262,000. A pair of enormous vases, much taller than ours—we're talking 150 cm tall—are asking prices for €19,000, €31,000, and €76,000, respectively, for vases measuring 37 cm, 22 cm, and 28 cm. All this just to give you an idea of the value of the Daum Brothers vases.

The beauty of the vase is undeniable, with its breathtaking color, from the yellow ochre of the upper portion to every shade of red, from the darkest to burgundy, medium red, and even orange, in the various layers of the bas-relief lake landscape. The beauty of this work can be appreciated even more by illuminating the interior of the vase, as you can see in the photos. The texture of the outer surface remains quite creamy, compact yet slightly porous and rough. The intense acid treatment is clearly noticeable, a very long artistic process necessary to achieve the final decoration. The glass is also very thick and heavy, thicker than blown Murano vases and even Gallé vases, for example, despite the similar decorative style and manufacturing technique. A delicate and evident patina covers the entire vase, making it even more beautiful. The vase's distinctive relief decoration was achieved by covering it with several layers of pitch, arranged to achieve the desired effect, even requiring multiple coats of acid, which eroded the glass in places. The red color of blown glass is achieved by mixing gold oxides into the glass; for this reason, red and amber glass are the most prized. This is an important, rare, and highly sought-after vase at auction.
