Here is some information about the artist:

"Alice Gay Valdez, age 85, passed away peacefully in sleep at in her Albuquerque home, Friday, February 23, 2024. Alice Valdez will be remembered through her iconic batik artwork, which celebrated the understated beauty of New Mexican scenery and culture. Alice was a storyteller, detailing the legends of the great American Southwest in every thoughtfully placed line and the rich symphonies of wax, dye, and fabric that became her artistic signature. Her art is usually displayed from a place of prominence in every home it graces, neither fading into the background nor overpowering the space. Her art stands the test of time and the fickle nature of public opinion because she captured the irrefutable inherent enchantment of life in the southwest, as it was & as it exists today.

Alice had the ability to energize an entire room with her sunny personality and beguiling laugh. She was warm to the point of electric and had no difficulty poking around in even the most sensitive conversational territory by showing her willingness to be vulnerable and by maintaining a youthful, inquisitive nature. No one loved as openly and unconditionally as Alice, who exerted maternal influence on every generation of child she knew, filling in the gaps wherever a mom, aunt, grandmother, or sister was needed in a situation.

Alice was a woman of many talents and facets, famed among those who knew her for her chile rellenos and rum cakes as much as her other activities. Alice was an avid tennis player. She met her husband Dick Gormon on the tennis courts at Montgomery Park. They traveled all over the world playing tennis, a long time player and champion both Locally and in Europe in the USTA Senior Tennis League. She also was an accomplished member of the American contract bridge league, earning the rank of ACBL Life Master.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents Capt. Albert P Wilcox (WWII POW) and Julia Moore Wilcox and husband, Richard “Dick” Gorman. Survived by her brother Al Wilcox (Beth) of Pleasanton, CA, and her children David Valdez (Cindy) of Shady Shores, TX and Teresa Martin of Albuquerque, NM, 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Including extended family Martin (Karen) Valdez, Elaine (Larry) Breen and many others. She was born in Ft. Monroe, VA, moving to Albuquerque in 1950, attended UNM and received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree."
