BING & GRONDAHL

Seagull Dinner Plate #624

Royal Copenhagen Seagull Dinner Plate #624, 24 cm (9.5 inch) diameter, which is the standard Danish dinner plate size. Seagull was the most popular pattern ever created by Bing & Grondahl (B&G), originating in the 19th century, competing with the Royal Copenhagen Blue Fluted pattern as the Danish national pattern. The prominent seagull in the center draws the eye; the molded fish-scale border adds a classic touch; all set off with gold trim. After B&G merged with Royal Copenhagen in 1987, the pattern was continued through the early 2000s with the Royal Copenhagen trademark. After the merger, they used the same molds, the same decorating techniques, and, in many cases, the same painters, and the Royal Copenhagen pieces are largely indistinguishable from the earlier B&G pieces, except for the trademarks and other marks on the back.

Appropriately marked with the three wavy line trademark of Royal Copenhagen and the shape number 624. The small lines over the letters “R” and “Y in ROYAL are a date code indicating that these plates were made between 1995 and 1999. I bought a large quantity of these plates directly from Royal Copenhagen when the pattern was discontinued. As of the date of this listing, I have just 16 left in stock.

EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, repairs) and FIRST QUALITY (no scratch through the trademark). Still NEW IN BOX about 25 years later. Old dealer stock, never displayed or sold at retail. Some of the BOXES show considerable shelf wear (see photo), but the plates are all pristine.
