Carved Alligator Salt & Pepper Shakers, Florida Folk Art, c.1870-1930

Description: Finely detailed salt and pepper shakers carved in wood with metal screw on tops, depicting alligators wrapped around an orange. These were popular Florida souvenirs during the golden age of tourism (1870–1930), especially along Jacksonville’s Bay Street, known as “Alligator Alley.” True examples of Old Florida folk art.

Dimensions: 2 1/2 in. x 2 1/4 diameter.

Date: Late 18th or early 19th century

Origin: Private Collection

Maker: Unknown artisan, likely Jacksonville, Florida

Condition: Excellent, with detailed carving and original folk art character. The wood has shrunken with age such that the tops do not stay on. If you want to use them I recommend using soft paper wrapped around the tops to attach the tops.

Please see photos as they are an integral part of the condition report and ask any questions that you have about the item so that we can satisfy you.
