Large 18th/19th C. Afghan AFTABA Ewer from HERAT - Indo-Persian Metalwork
A large and exceptionally decorative antique Aftaba (ewer), originating from Herat, Afghanistan.
Provenance & Dating:
This piece has excellent, documented provenance. It was purchased by the consignor's family in 1979 at a specialized auction in Austria and comes with its original auction label from that sale still attached to the base. The 1979 auction catalogued the ewer as originating from Herat, Afghanistan and dating to the 18th century.
Style & Craftsmanship:
The ewer is a masterful example of the Indo-Persian style. It is made from tinned copper or a similar alloy, which has been intricately hand-chased and engraved over its entire surface. The dense floral and geometric patterns are highlighted with a black lacquer filling, creating a stunning visual contrast. The elegant form features a globular body, a tall, slender neck, and a gracefully curved spout and handle, topped with a stylized bird's head thumb-rest.

- Condition: Excellent antique condition with no damages, consistent with its age and long-time placement in a well-kept private collection. The old wooden base is part of the lot.
