Why
is this version so rare? These badges were a prototype that were
issued only on the West Coast of the United States: California, Oregon
and Washington state. Some also seem to have made their way inland to
Idaho, Nevada and Colorado.
I have included a photo showing the
difference between WCC badges and the eras immediately before and
after. BMG (Bright Medium Green) badges, 1948-1955, had excess fabric
around the edges that had to be sewn under. "Merrow" badges saw the end
of this excess fabric and were much easier to be sewn onto uniforms.
WCC was an experimentation before the first official series of Merrow
badges. *BEWARE mistaking trimmed BMG badges as WCC! West Coast will ALWAYS have dark green thread with Merrow badges, NOT light green! And they are always thick, interlocking DOUBLE rows.
