- Pope John Paul II made history when he visited San Antonio, Texas, on Sept. 13, 1987, as part of his nine-city tour of the United States.
- It was the first and only time a pope visited the Alamo City, drawing an estimated 350,000 people to his outdoor Mass at Westover Hills. The visit highlighted the city’s deep Catholic roots and growing Hispanic population, with the pope delivering a message of unity and faith in both English and Spanish.
- During his time in San Antonio, the pope also visited San Fernando Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedrals in the country, and he spoke to religious leaders about the importance of cultural diversity in the church. His visit left a lasting impact on the city, with many who attended recalling it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
