Das alte Bett des Oxus Amû-darja

The book "The Old Bed of the Oxus Amu-Darya (1875)" by Michiel Jan de Goeje is a historical study of the Oxus Amu-Darya River, which flows through Central Asia. The author examines the geography, history, and archaeology of the region and describes the river's importance to the culture and economy of the surrounding areas. De Goeje uses a wide range of sources to support his arguments, including ancient texts, travel accounts, and scholarly research. The book is an important contribution to the study of Central Asian history and culture and will be valued by historians, geographers, and archaeologists alike.

The Amu Darya (/ˌɑːmuː ˈdɑːrjə/ AH-moo DAR-yə),[a](Persian: آمو دریا) also shortened to Amu and historically known as the Oxus (/ˈɒksəs/ OK-səss),[2][b] is a major river in Central Asia, which flows through Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan. Rising in the Pamir Mountains, north of the Hindu Kush, the Amu Darya is formed by the confluence of the Vakhsh and Panj rivers, in the Tigrovaya Balka Nature Reserve on the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and flows from there north-westwards into the southern remnants of the Aral Sea. In its upper course, the river forms part of Afghanistan's northern border with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. In ancient history, the river was regarded as the boundary of Greater Iran with Turan, which roughly corresponded to present-day Central Asia. The Amu Darya has a flow of about 70 cubic kilometers per year on average.

ĀMŪ DARYĀ, Gk. Oxos, Lat. Oxus, Sasanian Mid. Pers. Wehrōd, Ar. Jayḥūn (to the 7th/13th cent.), Chinese Kui-shui, Wu-hu, or Po-tsu, river about 2,500 km long, regarded in ancient times as the boundary between Iran and Tūrān. The modern name may be derived from Āmol, the town at which in antiquity the road from Khorasan to Transox iana (Ar. Mā Warāʾ al-Nahr) crossed the river.
