Fortune's sixth annual selection of laureates for Junior Achievement's Hall of Fame for Business Leadership includes William Milfred Batten (born:1909), retired CEO of J.C. Penney and currently chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. He was raised in West Virginia, graduated from Ohio State University, and joined Penney in 1935. Batten became president of J.C. Penney in 1958 and under his leadership sales zoomed from $1.4 billion that year to $6.9 billion in 1974, when he retired. Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 4-2-1980.
