A magnificent majolica jug, entirely hand-crafted on a wheel, glazed and decorated by hand under the glaze, signed under the base by the Santa Lucia factory of Siena, founded by Dino Rofi, dating back to the early 20th century.
Useful information for the evaluation of the object:
Just below this description, we've included some auction estimates for ceramics from this factory, all at very high prices, to give an idea of the value of their production. Keep in mind that these are all fairly old prices, ranging from 2008 to 2010, so compared to today, with the loss of purchasing power of money, they would certainly be much higher. Furthermore, these are starting prices, prices that could always rise during the auction and to which a 25-30% premium must always be added.
Final thoughts on the object:
The particularly bright cadmium yellow background is beautiful, enriched by hand-painted checkered decorations under the mouth and base, executed with a brush by the decorator (a type of decoration called "checkered," for which Dino Rofi is particularly renowned), and by oblique blue and black bands. This geometric decoration, along with the lines of the jug, recalls elements of the Futurist style. The central decoration under the spout is also beautiful, consisting of a heraldic coat of arms with a double-headed eagle. Finally, note the slightly concave banded handle, also decorated with blue and black lines on a wonderful, bright yellow background. The double-headed eagle typically symbolizes the union of two empires, with one head looking toward the East and the other toward the West. A rare and collectible piece.
Information on artist and/or manufacturer:
The "Santa Lucia. Rofi & C." ceramics factory has been operating in Siena since the late 1910s, founded by Dino Rofi. The factory, of which only a few valuable examples remain, ceased production in the early 1960s. Initially, it produced Renaissance and Oriental-style ceramics, and from 1930 onward, it began producing Art Deco and Novecento styles. In the final photos immediately below this description, we've provided more detailed information about Dino Rofi and his factory for those interested in learning more.
