The Eastern Dowitcher is a medium-sized shorebird with a long, straight bill and a stocky build. In breeding plumage, it has a reddish-brown belly and underparts with darker mottling, while its non-breeding plumage is grayish-brown overall. Often found in shallow wetlands, mudflats, and marshes, it uses its bill to probe for insects, crustaceans, and small mollusks in the mud. Known for its distinctive "sewing machine" feeding motion, the Eastern Dowitcher migrates long distances between North America and its wintering grounds in Central and South America.
