Source and Description:

The plant is a lichen symbiosis of the simplest unicellular algae, marsupials, and nitrogen bacteria. Such a union allows to survive in the harsh climate of the far Arctic. Reindeer moss is an erect, many-branched lichen that grows up to 8 cm high and found in great abundance in Arctic lands. Reindeer lichen grows extremely slowly - about 3-4 mm per year, therefore arise difficulties in obtaining.

All parts of Reindeer lichen are edible. It may be dry in winter but can be soaked. Boiling removes the plant's bitterness. It can be added as a thickener to milk or grains or dried and stored. In Iceland Reindeer lichen was used to make folk medicines and in a few traditional dishes.

Northern native people and Icelanders from ancient times used of Reindeer moss of the tundra in medicinal teas to treat colds and various fevers (to relieve the weakness and ache), lung diseases and inflammation of the respiratory tract (to relieve the dry and wet cough). Reindeer moss tea was used for chest pains for native hunters who were climbing hills.

Traditionally Icelanders used Reindeer lichens as a poultice to treat baldness and restoring hair loss. Also when open wounds and violation of the integrity of the skin (ulcers, furunculosis, eczema and other problems), vikings covered the site of damage with Cladonia rangiferina and the wound remained clean and there was no suppuration.

Modern medicine has confirmed the centuries-old knowledge of the indigenous peoples of the North and revealed that Reindeer lichen is a important medicinal agents and able to have the antimicrobial, laxative, anti-inflammatory, soothing, gemostatic, wound healing effects.

A variety of bioactive compounds and beneficial components have been isolated and identified from Cladonia rangiferina:

  • Complex of nitrogenous substances;
  • Acids (ascorbic, ursic, 15-acetylimbricatoloic, junicedric, 7-α-hydroxysandaracopimaric, β-resorylic, cis-communic, imbricatolic, barbatic,homosekikaic, didymic, condidymic acid);
  • Organic compounds with hydroxyl functional groups (retinol, sugiol, 5,6-dehydrosugiol, montbretol, atronol, hanagokenol A, hanagokenol B);
  • Trace elements (nickel, iodine, barium, titanium, chromium, copper, manganese, iron, etc);
  • Terpenes (abietane, labdane, isopimarane, etc).

The use of Reindeer lichen depends on the ultimate goal. For poultices and other external uses, whole or shredded Reindeer lichen is soaked in clean water. For internal use, special mucus, decoctions (in water or milk), infusions and teas are prepared from Reindeer lichen.
