Polyester Resin For Fibreglass

This Value Resin is optimised for use with Fibreglass, It could be for repairs, new mouldings , constructions. Loads of uses but it goes hand in hand with Fibreglass material. Works well for Fibreglass Roofs

The resin has a Blue dye, this changes once the resin is activated by the MEKP hardener. The final colour  ends up a more natural colour with slight hint of green, but this is subjective.

The resin is NOT Lloyds approved but this is only a factor for marine craft repairs and projects that require an audit trail to maintain Lloyds Insurance cover for said craft. The resin is of a similar spec and performance of a Lloyds approved resin and is suited for the the vast majority non marine  projects and repairs.

The resin is very well suited for Fibreglass Roof and Pond projects.

Fibreglass Matting - Chopped Strand Matt (c.s.m.)

This fibreglass matting is often called CHOPPED STRAND MATT ( CSM ). Its mostly used together with Fibreglass ( polyester ) resin. The matting provides the strength and structural support with the resin acting as a binder.

We stock  3 different " weights " or thickness. This is measured in "grams per sq M". The 600g/ m has twice the amount of glass strands compared with the 300g option with the 450g taking the middle ground. A heavier grade of CSM will soak up more resin in comparison to lighter grades.

The heavier material will be stiffer and less pliable, If you have curves and complex shapes, consider using the lighter matting and building up layers ( 2 layers of 300g/m for example ).

Available Thickness ( weight of glass )

300g/Sq M  -  Coverage :  750g resin per Sq M or 2.5kg resin per Kg of CSM

450g/Sq M   -  Coverage : 1.2kg per Sq M or 2.5kg resin per Kg of CSM.

600g/Sq M   -   Coverage : 1.5 kg Resin per Sq M or 2.5kg resin per kg of CSM.

Coverage Example

  • 2 Square Meter construction using single layer of  450g/sq M of Chopped strand Matt ( CSM)
  • 2 x 0.45 = 0.9kg of CSM
  •  0.9 x 2.5 = 2.25kg  of Resin Required

Therefore for a 2sq M project using a medium weight 450g CSM - the nearest size offered woudl be the 2.5kg version which allows for some wastage etc.

Basic Instructions on Mixing

1. Good preperation is key for a good outcome. Cut the fibreglass, prepare tools etc BEFORE mixing any resin . For repairs etc, surface will likley need sanding, this removes any contamination and roughens the surface to achieve a good mechanical adhesion .

2. Use gloves and keep project area well ventilated.

Highly reccomend WEIGHING  the resin using kitchen scales  but use a measuring jug to guage volume if unable to weigh . Its critical to NOT GUESS this part, this is the most common reason for failure.  Mix ratio is 2% :  For every 100g of resin add 2ml of MEKP  hardener, for every 1000  of resin add 20ml hardener.  Mix well, scraping the  sides of the container to avoid having unmixed resin.

The clock is now ticking, So get the resin applied without delay.  Mixing small manageable amounts and then repeating is preferable to trying to do loads and ending up with curing resin in the bucket . When using a brush, use a blotting action which pushes the resin into the fibrelass an dremoves unwanted Air pockets.

For larger areas ,  rollers can work well to apply the resin. The fibreglass roller pictured is also useful, it is a metal finned roller that compressors the fibreglass to remove air pockets. (Rollers available on our ebay store)

Working time ( gel time ) and curing time.
  • Working time ( gel time ) and Cure time are directly related to ambient temperature and amount of resin volume mixed. As a rule the larger the mix and the hotter the  conditions can result in reducing  this time to minutes so care is needed.
  • For example - a 1kg mix at 15 deg C mixed at 2% gives approx working time of  8-10 mins ,  A lower amount say 250g might increase Gel time to 12- 15 mins. However  If the temperature is over 20 deg then these times will reduce further.
  • Avoid very hot conditions over 25 deg.
  • Working time in hot conditions can be extended by reducing mix ratio to 1% (but never less),mix  accuracy is essential but still work quickly. Dont use a 1% ratio for cold conditions as the resin will struggle to cure.
  • Cold conditions- Avoid frost  but resin can be used at 5 Deg C or more, consider increasing ratio to 3% for small mixes.
  • For most conditions- full cure is expected after 24 hours but will take longer in very cold conditions

In summary - Avoid really hot and really cold condtions, mix accuratly in modest pours ( repeat if neccessery ) and work quickly

WARNING : Polyester resin products have a  very strong and powerful smell, This is common for all Polyester resin products,

Use gloves and keep repair area well ventilated.

Shelf life is 4 months from date of purchase, but tends to be longer if stored out of sunlight in cool conditions.
