19th Century Victorian Plunge Butter Churn
A lovely piece of original kitchenalia. Comprising of 3 seperate parts the churn the plunger and the lid. All are made of pine including the 3 bands or rings.Through repeated usage and drying out from lack of use the wood has shrunk slightly as is to be expected, therefor the base of the shaft or barrel is narrower than it was originally. The barrel tapers upwards to the top and 3 rings encase the outside. The rings or band on the outside have slipped slightly because the slight shrinkage and show as a lighter colour on the wood.. The shaft is very similar to a broom handle and a circular disc with small holes is attached to the base of it. This would allow the milk to squirt up through as the shaft was plunged up and down. A turned lid was fitted on top so that the milk would not splash out whilst being "churned" A time consuming job but home made butter would be created at the end . A very nice piece showing decoration as well as being a utility implement.
Height to the top of the churn..750mm,75cm ,29.5 inches
Width at base of churn 230mm,23cm,9 inches
Width at top of churn 160mm,16cm,6.5 inches
