The designs are created by dipping hand carved wooden blocks into the dye and then pressing the block onto the fabric in a repeated pattern to create the design. It is the oldest and slowest form of textile printing known to man. Irregularities or misplaced drops of dye are not considered defects but simply characteristics associated to the art of hand block printing.
