***********FOR PARTS/REPAIR - The Otero 792 automatic movement keeps accurate time over its approximate 21 hour power reserve period and the roulette date wheel at 6 o'clock rolls over automatically as it should. However, after winding the crown it's necessary to gently spin the watch face down on a soft, flat surface in order to jump-start the seconds hand. Additionally the oscillating weight is a bit loose as is the movement. As a result the dial vacillates when the crown is pulled out and pushed back in as well as when the date/time is set. Given these issues and considering the movement's unknown service history a complete overhaul is required.***********
This seldom seen vintage 1960/70's Grein has under the heavily damaged/scratched crystal a lovely but not perfect silvery champagne dial as it shows wear and it vacillates when the crown is pulled out and pushed back in as well as when the date/time is set. The lume, which remains fully intact and emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The faded black countdown bezel, which shows significant wear and rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension, presents nicely with the butterscotch lume pip complementing the dial and patina beautifully. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped "ALL STAINLESS - STEEL - ANTIMAGNETIC" with "100%" followed by "WATERPROOF TESTED" and "20 ATMOSPHERES" stamped in the center. The crystal needs to be replaced.
The 25 jewels Otero 792 automatic movement with semi-quickset date function keeps accurate time and the roulette (even red, odd black) date wheel at 6 o'clock rolls over at approximately 11:15 pm. After winding the crown it's necessary to gently spin the watch face down on a soft, flat surface in order to jump-start the seconds hand. The semi-quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 19.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement had an approximate 21 hour power reserve period. The crown winds buttery smooth. The oscillating weight is a bit loose as is the movement. Given the issues mentioned and considering the movement's unknown service history a complete overhaul is required.
This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9.5 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 12 mm.
A complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility.
