"Back to the roots" - This could be the title of the new THANATEROS album. Both in terms of the lyrical content as well as the musical direction.

As on the debut album "The First Rite", the songs are catchy and rock the hell out! This is in part due to Markus F., the new man on the drums, who locks in fantastically with the playful and yet driving bass playing of Chrys R. and the powerful heavy guitars of Chris L. whose atmospheric clean guitar parts underline the soulful, great violin playing of Christof U. And also, mastermind Ben R. is bursting with virtuosity - whether softly, evocatively sonorous or full of passionate aggression, rarely before has the THANATEROS singer shown himself to be so diverse and varied.

In addition, the five dark rockers - in keeping with THANATEROS' tradition - have once again brought on board a unique guest vocalist with Johanna Krins (Arctic Relief, Delva), who graces both the first single "Coven of the Drowned" and the poignant "Solitude" with her wonderful voice.

Musically, THANATEROS also take things up a notch with a variety of soundscapes and moods. But contrary to what the title might suggest, they also turn the "metal" screw!

The album produced by Simon Rippin, in which all instruments get equal space, manages to create an enormous auditory atmosphere despite its straightforwardness. This succeeds not least because of the creative use of synthesizers, which give the album a unique atmospheric depth.

In general, the new THANATEROS release is characterized by a fusion of different emotions. From dark broodings, to rousing brutal onslaughts, "On Fragile Wings" covers pretty much all imaginable moods, without losing direction.

This direction also reflects the lyrical content, best explained by the shamanic term "soul-view", which also means "back to the roots". Since the inception of THANATEROS, Ben Richter has taken us into a world of magic and shamanism which continues with "On Fragile Wings". Whether the transformation by fire, the rising in the circle of life, or the search for the inner power - in the shamanic imagination, it is our soul that goes through all these processes. And this is symbolised by the bird, which represents cross-culturally the soul … it’s feathers and wings carrying it away - referenced in the title and accompanying cover artwork.

And as delicate and fragile as these wings are, so is our soul … trying not to lose itself in the darkness. These abysses and this vulnerability of our soul is the second big theme of the album. Ben R. lets us look deep into his inner self, deals with dark topics and makes "On Fragile Wings" the most personal THANATEROS album so far.

„Zurück zu den Wurzeln“ - So könnte die Überschrift des neuen THANATEROS-Albums lauten. Und das sowohl in Bezug auf den inhaltlichen Hintergrund als auch auf die musikalische Ausrichtung.

Wie zu Zeiten des Debuts „The First Rite“ sind die Songs eingängig und rocken was das Zeug hält. Dies liegt einerseits an Markus F., dem neuen Mann an den Drums, der fantastisch mit dem verspielten und doch treibenden Bassspiel von Chrys R. harmoniert und andererseits an den brettharten Gitarren von Chris L. Dessen stets wiederkehrenden cleanen Gitarrenparts untermalen zudem das gefühlvolle, großartige Geigenspiel von Christof U. Und auch Mastermind Ben R. strotzt nur so vor Virtuosität – ob zerbrechlich zart, beschwörend sonor oder voll leidenschaftlicher Aggressivität, selten zuvor zeigte sich der THANATEROS- Sänger so vielfältig und abwechslungsreich.

Zudem haben sich die fünf Dark-Rocker – ganz nach THANATEROS-Tradition – mit Johanna Krins (Arctic Relief, Delva) auch wieder eine einzigartige Gastsängerin an Bord geholt, die mit ihrer großartigen Stimme sowohl die erste Single „Coven of the Drowned“ als auch das ergreifende „Solitude“ veredelt.

Musikalisch legen THANATEROS ebenfalls eine gehörige Schippe drauf und sprühen nur so vor Spielfreude und Abwechslungsreichtum. Und anders als der Titel vielleicht vermuten lassen mag, wird auch gehörig an der „Metal“-Schraube gedreht.

Die von Simon Rippin produzierte Scheibe, bei der alle Instrumente gleichermaßen Raum bekommen, schafft es trotz ihrer Geradlinigkeit, eine enorme auditive Atmosphäre zu erzeugen. Dies gelingt nicht zuletzt auf Grund der gefühlvoll eingesetzten Synthesizer, die es auf bemerkenswerte Art und Weise schaffen, dem Album eine einmalige stimmungsvolle Tiefe zu verleihen.
Überhaupt ist das neue THANATEROS Werk geprägt von einer harmonischen Verschmelzung unterschiedlichster Emotionen. Von atmosphärisch getragenen, gefühlsbetonten Augenblicken bis hin zu den erwähnten, mitreißend-brachialen Momenten deckt „On Fragile Wings“ so ziemlich alle erdenkbaren Stimmungen ab, ohne dabei den roten Faden zu verlieren.

Einen roten Faden kann man dann auch auf inhaltlicher Ebene erkennen, am besten erklärt durch den Begriff „Seelenschau“. Womit es auch hier heißt: „Back to the roots“. Denn wie zu den Anfängen von THANATEROS, so entführt uns Ben Richter auf „On Fragile Wings“ in die Welt der Magie und des Schamanismus. Ob die Transformation durch das Feuer, das Aufgehen im Kreis des Lebens oder die Suche nach der inneren Kraft – in der schamanischen Vorstellung ist es unsere Seele, die all diese Prozesse durchläuft. Und als Symbol unserer Seele dient kulturübergreifend der Vogel, sind es Federn und Schwingen, die unsere Seele hinfort tragen – womit auch der Bezug zum Titel und dem stimmigen Cover-Artwork gegeben ist.

Und so filigran und zerbrechlich wie die Flügel auf dem Cover, so empfindsam ist unsere Seele, so gefährdet ist sie, sich in der Dunkelheit zu verlieren. Diese Abgründe, diese Verletzlichkeit unserer Seele sind das zweite große Thema des Albums. Ben R. lässt uns dabei tief in sein Inneres schauen, verarbeitet gewichtige Themen und macht dadurch „On Fragile Wings“ zu dem bisher persönlichsten THANATEROS-Album.
