This is a hand colored lithograph of Shau-Hau-Napo-Tinia, an Ioway Chief who visited Washington DC in the early to mid 1800's.  Many tribal Indian chiefs visited Washington for peace talks.  While visiting their image was captured by various artists including Charles Bird King.  These portraits were published in History of the Indian Tribes of North America, in Philadelphia, PA between the years of 1837-1844.  These were large books and quite expensive.  A smaller edition was published in 1875 and this picture was taken from that book.  It was published by D. Rice and A. N. Hart.  The lithograph was printed and colored by J. T. Bowen.  This picture measures 9 3/4" x 6" in the matted area.  The picture frame measures 15" x 12" x 1/2".

This is a wonderful antique piece of art, framed for protection.  The frame is not suitable for hanging.  It is in very good antique condition. Some discoloration from handling.
