Alice Caviness Vintage Costume Jewelry: 1945 through 1982 with Alice Caviness
& through 2000 with Lois Steever
Alice Caviness began her career as a fashion and glove model. She moved to the costume jewelry business at the end of World War II, sometime in 1945. Her husband Jules Junquerra who was in the lamp and shade business, came to work with her when the business began to grow. The first Caviness showroom was at the corner of 5th Avenue & 34th Street in New York City. In the mid-50's they moved to 435 5th Avenue, where they occupied the fourth & fifth floors. DeMario Jewelry was on the 6th floor, and they were now right across the street from Lord & Taylor’s. In addition to the New York showroom, Caviness eventually had showrooms in Dallas, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Miami, Florida; Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California. Caviness Jewelry was sold only in high-end department stores, boutiques and fine jewelry shops across the United States. They were very selective about who was authorized to carried their jewelry.
Only part of Caviness Jewelry was produced in their own factory. They also imported jewelry from Europe, specifically Western Germany. They commissioned some pieces from other manufacturers as well. In the early 1960's Alice & Jules found manufacturers of superb sterling, and gold-on-sterling vermeil, cloisonne enamels and filigrees in Europe to import. Those pieces along with their fashion line, which consisted of rhinestone and beaded costume jewelry, comprised the Caviness Collection. Designs could be run for many years if they continued to be in demand. Caviness jewelry was designed by Alice herself, and by Millie Petronzio, her head designer. Millie (later head designer at Miriam Haskell Jewelry), worked with Caviness until 1982. They often worked together by exchanging ideas, examining beads, rhinestones and findings and selecting color combinations. A former employee remembers that they did not work from sketches! In about 1957 Alice Caviness was joined by Lois Steever, originally a sales representative, who after 25 years with the company, bought it from the Caviness's in 1982. (who had retired to Florida in about 1980). Alice died in 1983, however, the Alice Caviness Jewelry Company continued production, with Lois Steever, until around 2000.
Caviness Jewelry, distinctive and unusual, is very popular with vintage jewelry collectors today. There were far fewer pieces produced of this special jewelry than those by companies like Coro or Trifari. It is difficult to find good pieces today, therefore they are very collectible.

PLEASE NOTE: The "Alice" trademark is often confused with the better known brand, ALICE CAVINESS. These are two completely separate companies, and are easily distinguished by the makers marks, the design styles, as well as the materials they used. ALICE CAVINESS founded her eponymous company in the 1940's in New York. ALICE CAVINESS branded her jewelry with her full name, in block uppercase letters.
