Sphinx:
Founded in 1948 in the UK in Chiswick England, English jewelry company Sphinx has become famous for their exquisite costume jewelry of high quality. Their beautiful ornaments were designed to look like real jewels. In the 1950-60's Sphinx produced jewelry for such brands as Ciner, Jomaz, and Boucher. The company borrowed the most interesting designs of these brands, sometimes surpassing the artistic beauty of the original. Examples are copies Sphinx made of the famous collection of birds by Boucher, such as the famous peacock & birds of paradise. Marked and numbered, Sphinx products appeared only in the 1960's.

The quality of their jewelry was so high, Sphinx began to produce jewelry exclusively for such brands and stores as Kenneth Jay Lane, Butler & Wilson, Saks 5th Ave., Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Mark & Spencer and other high end department stores, in Europe as well as the United States. Their jewelry is now highly collectible since Sphinx ceased operations in the late 1990's.

Mark: SPHINX in an oval cartouche with some having a LETTER AND NUMBER included, or without the Sphinx name, having only a LETTER AND NUMBER in a cartouche. Unsigned pieces were either for customers who wanted to sell pieces as their own, because work was produced in a rush to meet demand, or because there wasn't space on the design. Pieces may have either numbers only or a letter and numbers. These were design numbers.
