"T.S. Matthews was born in Cincinnati in 1901, the son of a minister and a scion of the Procter & Gamble dynasty. A graduate of St. Paul's School and Princeton, he went to New York in the twenties to embark on a journalistic career that would take him from a stint at The New Republic during Edmond Wilson's tenure to the editorship of Time in its most influential days under Henry Luce.
From his eighty-odd years in this century, Matthews has chosen those 'angels,' largely unwitting, who helped form and direct his perspectives on life: cousins and aunts; schoolmasters and mates; bootleggers and priests; colleagues and world figures - among them Winston Churchill, James Thurber, Adlai Stevenson, James Agee, Whittaker Chambers, Gertrude Stein, and Albert Einstein.
A refined and discerning man, T.S. Matthews views his peers with the passionate detachment of a John Mortimer or an E.B. White. He looks on them with wisdom, humor, and clear-eyed affection. He sees them as they were: blissfully human" [from the dust jacket]
